The Tower

The tower was built during the War of the Roses 1380-1420. The height to the battlements is 92 feet. The highest weather vane is 130 feet. The pinnacles vary in height the North West is the highest and is 2 feet 2 inches taller than the North East (the smallest).

The double spiral staircase is 5 feet 11 inches in diameter. The outer has 160 steps, the innner 101 steps. It is honeycombed with passages and actually stands on 3 legs and a wall. It is the only double staircase in the country. The only other known is in The Chateau of Chambord near Tours, France.

It was orignally intended to have a high central spire but the plan was abandoned when it was discovered that subsidence had taken place, so the four pinnacles were erected instead.
