Church Bell Ringing
Who can do it? Bellringing is a rewarding pastime that will
keep you physically fit (the stairs alone do that!) and mentally sharp.
However, you don't have to be especially fit or young to endure the physical
exercise and as long as you can climb the stairs to the ringing chamber
it's certain you will be able to pull a rope.
How do I learn? Learning to ring requires a certain amount
of commitment. If you wish to pursue this pastime, you will require special
tuition and be expected to attend practice night regularly. It can take
some people up to two years to master the art of ringing whereas some
can learn in 6 months - it depends on you. Once you can ring proficiently
you will also be expected to ring for some Sunday services.
Is that it? There are many different aspects to bellringing.
Some ringers tenaciously pursue increasingly difficult methods (a set
pattern of ringing that involves many different combinations of bells),
some try and accumulate peals (long stretches of time ringing methods)
or visit different towers, whereas others are happy to steadily improve.
Apart from the regular trip to the local public house after practice night,
an aspect of bellringing that has been retained over the centuries, Tamworth
ringers also have an annual tower outing and Christmas dinner.
What now? Tamworth Church Bellringers practice regularly on
a Wednesday night and ring for Sunday services. If you can already ring
or want to find out more about ringing we would be pleased to see you
on practice night.
