The Bells

The earliest date for the bells is 1552 when Church Commissioners carried out an inventory of churches.

In the 17th Century the original bells were melted down and replaced by six bells. Dates on four of the bells are 1607, 1621, 1628 and 1629. In 1833-1834 the bells were relined. Two were re-cast and two added.

In 1931 it became necessary to replace the bell frame. A steel frame was installed, which also strengthened the tower. In 1960 a further two bells were added to commemorate the 1,000 Anniversary of St. Editha's death.

Recently the bells have been moved to improve the quality of the ringing circle and sound control has been added.
